“Coco” Movie Review

by Sheryl Wall

Special coupon for Dinuba Platinum Theatre at the end of this review.

Coco is the newest Disney/Pixar film which came out just in time for Thanksgiving. The movie stars Miguel, a 12-year-old boy, who has a deep desire to become a musician like his idol the late Ernesto Del le Cruz. However, his family tells Miguel that due to his great-great-grandfather leaving his family to pursue music the family has banned music and expects everyone to go into the family business of making shoes. Miguel has no interest in making shoes and really can't get music out of his head.

Coco takes place during the Mexican holiday Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Friends and family honor the lost with setting up altars with their loved ones photos and favorite foods. Miguel wants to enter a music contest that takes place that day, but when his family discovers his love of music and that he has a guitar, his grandmother smashes his guitar so he can't pursue his music interests anymore and insists he start making shoes with the family. Miguel is determined to not let this stop him and sneaks out. He steals Ernesto Del Le Cruz's guitar from his memorial. When he does, he finds he has entered the land of the non-living.

Miguel finds his family that live in the land of the non-living. Miguel has until sundown to get his family's blessing to return to the land of the living or he will be stuck there forever. But his family puts a condition on it that he won't pursue music anymore once he returns. He refuses and runs off. In his journey to find a way to get home, Miguel discovers some unexpected truths about his family.

Coco is a unique movie, and the story unfolds in very unexpected ways. I enjoyed the colorful scenes and the music that is sung throughout. Anytime I see there is a Pixar movie out, I don't want to miss it. Coco does not disappoint. It is a very unique storyline and kept me and my family engaged throughout the movie. It’s a great movie for the youngest to the oldest so a perfect movie for the whole family.
